Nidavellir just means Dark Plains, it’s a place in the North (so I assume Niflheim) where there’s a hall made of gold where Sindri’s lineage lives, Sindri being a dwarf. This is probably the best model I personally can come up with right now based on what I read in the Eddas. Mimir’s well in Jötunheim, Well of Urd/Well of Fate in Midgard or Asgard, and Hvergelmir in Helheim. Yggdrasil is said to have 3 roots, one reaches Jötunheim, another reaches Helheim and another reaches Asgard (although in other poems it says Midgard instead of Asgard). No details given, besides that it was given to Freyr as a tooth-gift. For all we know, it might as well be a building rather than a geographic location. They are said to live inside rocks, mountains and inside the ground, so any of those could be called Svartalfheim.Īlfheim means Land of the Elves and is said to be in the heavens as well. It’s just a place where Black Elves a.k.a dwarves live. And good luck sneaking inside the realms of the gods with Heimdall constantly watching. And the only ways to get there from Midgard is through the Bifröst or by dying and becoming a einhrejar. But at the same time it is said to be “in the heavens”. Yeah, Helheim is inside Niflheim.Īsgard was said to be built in “Idavoller” which means Esplendor Plain, Asgard is also said to have been built in the center of the world. Niflheim is to the north but it is dark, cold, and also where the dead live. Muspelheim is to the south but it’s so hot only those native to the realm can survive in it. Jötunheim is to the East but there’s a deep ocean between it and Jörmungandr is in this ocean. They are locations or continents that are just extremely hard to reach by humans.

The realms aren’t planets in the branches of a tree. There’s never a mention of the branches holding the realms. Is there a 'generally accepted' right answer? Or is any interpretation considered valid? Generally speaking, do people consider Hel as part of Niflheim? Do people consider Nidavellir as it's own world (rather than the dwarves living in Svartalfheim)? And then there's the thought of Alfheim being a hall in Vanaheim.īecause that would change the layout considerably. I guess for me, the big question are these: Niflheim and Muspelheim are lower down.Vanaheim and Alfheim are also closer to the top (but below Asgard).(We know that Jotunheim is definitely in the east the lore says as much.) Midgard, Jotunheim, and Svartalfheim are all more or less level with the tops of the roots of the tree. According to some stories in Norse mythology, Norns were from different origins some were of divine origin, others originated with the elves and the dwarfs. And I have figured out that there is a 'generally' agreed upon 'layout' for where each of the nine worlds is.
